It landed near the scene on the coast-bound carriageway between the A2018 Old Bexley Lane (Dartford Heath) and the M25 J2 (Darenth Interchange) just before 5am but tragically the driver could not be saved.

The stretch was closed for more than 12 hours to allow for investigations into the circumstances.

A diversion was in place via the A2018, B2174 and A225 through Dartford to re-join at J1B of the M25.

One witness who drove past the scene on his way to work said he "never seen anything like it".

Jamie Ruck added: "When I drove past the air ambulance was there, several fire crew members as well as police including forensics and multiple ambulance crews.

"They were followed by the traffic officers that was turning traffic around to clear the dual carriageway and allow the police and other emergency services to carry out their jobs.

"It just puts it into perspective how dangerous driving can actually be."
