It seems one party-goer was in a little too much of a hurry to get home in the early hours of the new year.

Police officers say the driver "flew past" them on the A2 at Darenth, near Dartford at almost double the speed limit.

The driver was clocked doing 97mph (54031866)

They clocked him as doing 97mph in a 50mph zone.

In addition, once stopped, the motorist admitted using cannabis and he proved positive for the drug when tested by officers on the roadside, police said.

He was arrested at the scene and samples were taken.

A police spokesman said: "At 2.25am on January 1, a 23-year-old man from Canterbury was arrested on suspicion of driving offences including being under the influence of drugs. His vehicle was stopped by officers in Hever Court Road, Gravesend.

"The suspect was taken into custody and later released pending further investigation."
