A racing driver whose car "barrel rolled" six times while travelling at more than 100mph escaped unharmed thanks to an all-important safety feature.

Rob Boston crashed his Ford Fusion during a two-day time trial event at Brands Hatch.

The 29-year-old was overtaking another driver at speed when there was a slight collision.

His vehicle finally came to a halt after it crashed through the course's safety barrier and nearly took out a marshal post.

Photographer Stephen Jackman captured the 'monster' crash on camera. He said: "The driver came along the finish straight on a normal lap and was trying to overtake.

"He goes to the right and hit an exit which catapulted him across the track and barrel rolled about six times."

Medics rushed to Rob's aid and his team say he is okay but "feeling a bit sore".

Freelancer Stephen contacted Rob following the accident to check his condition.

He praised the response of the track's owners MotorSport Vision and said had it not been for marshals, medics and certain safety features things could have been "very different".

"Rob, in conjunction with his team Arc Autosport fabricated a safety cell inside," Stephen said.

"Without this he could have been seriously injured plus the safety fencing around Brands Hatch saved the marshal's life."

He added: "Big mention to the marshals who do this job for free and the prompt action of the medical team in dealing with Rob after the impact as well."

Rob's motoring team Arc Autosport said the community support in the wake of the crash had been "overwhelming".

On social media racing car enthusiasts were quick to point out the car's all important safety feature.

One said: "Just goes to show you how important a decent cage is and harnesses to someone’s safety"

Another added: "Had a bad crash myself lately on track and having safety equipment makes you realise how important it is.

"Glad he's OK and the safety equipment did there job!"
