The intriguing history of Oxney Court, the abandoned village near Deal, is the subject of a talk.

This will be given by Christine Waterman MBE at a Dover Society public meeting tomorrow.

Oxney, set in more than 300 acres, is hidden by a small forest of trees just off the Dover-Deal road on the outskirts of Ringwould.

Dating back at least to the 11th century it is a mystery why, for many years, it was abandoned. Some believe it might have lost its inhabitants to the plague.

The estate, with its remains of a ruined church, is now private property. Parts of it are Grade II listed.

Access to Oxney is from Oxney Bottom (on the Dover-Deal highway) where there are claims, over the years, of ghostly apparitions including the sighting of a grey lady.

A second speaker at the meeting is Doug Bannister the chief executive of Dover Harbour Board who will give an update on the Port of Dover.

The talk is at St Mary's Parish Centre, Church Street, from 7.30pm on Monday, November 18.
