A cordon was placed on the cliffs in Kingsdown over fears a wartime bomb had been uncovered.

But checks proved the device was not a threat to the public.

Police were called to Leas Road which is home to a number of large residential properties and Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club around 1pm today.

A spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report a suspected wartime munitions device had been found in Leas Road, Kingsdown.

"Officers attended and enforced a cordon as a precaution.

"Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts from the Ministry of Defence have since attended and confirmed the item is not a wartime munitions device and not a threat to public safety."

During the First World War, a military airfield operated from Hawkshill Freedown between Kingsdown and Walmer.

The site is also above the former Royal Marines rifle range built by the Ministry of Defence.

In 2016, 24 Second World War devices were detonated in a controlled explosion at nearby Wellington Parade.

Work men digging for a new fence uncovered a suspicious liquid in jars beneath the soil, which KFRS confirmed was phosphorus, a poisonous chemical.
