It followed reports of a man in the sea who, according to an eyewitness, had been spotted by a fisherman.

HM Coastguard also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to a report of a man in the sea near Bay Hill, St Margaret’s Bay shortly before 8am on Friday, July 3.

"Officers attended along with HM Coastguard and South East Coast Ambulance Service and the man, who was in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner. His next of kin have been informed."
