A homelessness charity has received a grant of £4,038 to pay for a commercial cooker for its on-site clients.

Emmaus Dover, at Archcliffe Road, got the donation from the Morrisons Foundation.

The charity's old oven and hob came from a commercial kitchen more than five years age but was now, with ageing, less able to cope with constant use.

Debra Stevenson, the charity's community manager, said “Each day, our companions (clients) cook and prepare three hot meals for the other members of the community.

"Much of the food used each day is donated from local supermarkets, including Morrisons.

" One of our current companions - used to be a chef in London hotels, and has previously cooked for the Queen.”

“They oversee all meal planning and cooking."

Jemma Abbitt, community champion at the Dover Morrisons store in Charlton Green, said: “Emmaus makes such a difference to the lives of their companions, offering accommodation, meals and support when they need it most."

The Morrisons Foundation was set up as a charity by Morrisons Supermarkets in 2015 and since then more than £33 million has gone to hundreds of causes across Britain.

Emmaus Dover, based at Archcliffe Fort, provides accommodation and work opportunities for up to 27 men and women that have previously experienced homelessness and social exclusion.

Its companions are also able to have regular access to health services, such as doctors, dentists, opticians and other support services, such as alcohol and substance rehabilitation programmes.
