Immigration enforcement officers have been seen entering Napier Barracks as the fallout of yesterday's disturbance continues.

A heavy police presence has been seen in and around the barracks in Folkestone since the incident yesterday afternoon.

At least four immigration enforcement vans have been seen driving into the barracks, joining numerous police cars and vans.

It is not clear whether the force intend to remove the asylum seekers– either permanently or temporarily – or how many will be affected out of the 350 or so that remain at the site.

An eyewitness at the scene said: "IT seems like the asylum seekers are still being housed in the barracks - they have been relocated to alternate dorms.

"We've been told that the home office are on standby in case they are required by police."

Police and the Home Office have been contacted for comment.

This latest development comes after an arson investigation was launched last night after a building went up in flames during the disturbance.

It follows weeks of unrest at the barracks following a number of positive covid cases among the residents.

A number of asylum seekers were taken to nearby hotels to ease the situation, but many who remained still feared that they were not covid-secure.

Photos are emerging today of the damage done to the site, which has been housing asylum seekers since October of last year.

A Home Office spokeswoman stated that the disturbance started when "a number of asylum seekers who remained at Napier objected to not being moved off site".

She said: "They became aggressive, turned violent and began to set about destroying the barracks.

"Windows were smashed, an accommodation block was set on fire, and staff were intimidated.

"Kent Police and fire services attended to maintain order and put out the fire. The situation is now under control and an investigation is ongoing."

More as we get it.
