A man has been charged with assault following a disturbance which led to a 10-hour armed police siege at a house in Northfleet.

Police were initially called to an address in Kemsley Close at 6.55pm on Thursday, May 28, and armed police were subsequently called due to concerns a weapon was at the address.

It wasn't until the following morning that the siege came to an end, and a crossbow was seized.

However the weapon is not reported to have been used during the alleged assault, in which two people are said to have been pushed or punched.

Douglas Furness has since been charged with two counts of assault by beating and affray.

The 50-year-old, of Kemsley Close, was remanded in custody and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, May 30.

At the hearing, he was released on bail and will next appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, June 26.
