Following the harsh conditions caused by Storm Ciara, Gravesend river front is facing extreme flooding due to this afternoon's high tide.

This morning the Government website issued a flood alert warning between 10.45am and 14.45pm with the highest tide level at 12.45pm along the coast between Dartford and Allhallows.

The statement said: "There is a possibility of flooding for low lying land near the coast and in particular along Gravesend promenade.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking our defences and structures and are prepared to respond if required. We are expecting higher than normal tides over the next three days and may be issuing further messages during this time."

Dog walkers have reported substantial flooding along Gravesend river front and Royal Pier Road, describing the flooding like a 'waterfall'.

It is also believed the town pier has been closed due to the rising Thames.

Today's flooding follows the havoc caused by Storm Ciara across Gravesend at the weekend.

The oldest tree at The George pub, in Singlewell, was blown down, whilst scaffolding above The Goose pub and Gravesend McDonald's sign was also damaged by the weather.

Strong winds from Storm Ciara are expected to remain across the county today until 7pm.

Kent was battered by Ciara yesterday, which forced the closures of the QEII Bridge and the Sheppey Crossing as well as the Port of Dover.

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for today, with very strong gusts expected across the south.
