Herne Bay man arrested in Whitstable after armed police close Mickleburgh Hill

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after armed police closed off a road.

Firearms officers were called to a property in Mickleburgh Hill, Herne Bay, at 9.40am this morning following a report of a disturbance

A woman reported being attacked by a man, who was thought to be in possession of a weapon.

She suffered injuries, but they are not believed to be serious.

Janet Smith, who was looking after her son's dog at his home in Herne Avenue at the time, says she could hear shouting as police entered the property.

"There was a siege going on," the 73-year-old said.

"There were armed police in full gear and they blocked the road in Mickleburgh Hill and Herne Avenue. There were a lot of police dogs as well.

"The police went down an alley behind some of the blocks of flats houses. I could hear a lot of shouting, police shouting.

"It was quite alarming to see them in their riot gear with masks on and guns. My son's been living here for three years and nothing like this has ever happened."

Roger Turner, who lives in nearby Downs Park, says one of his neighbours heard screams coming from the property.

"We only came here when they were leaving," he added.

"There must been five or six police cars and there were some ambulances parked down the road.

"It's always been a nice quiet area and there's never really been trouble."

A man from Herne Bay was arrested just after midday in Clifton Road, Whitstable.

A 25-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of assault (13085644)

Despite carrying out a search of the area, police did not recover a weapon.
