A brewery says it has had its most successful month ever courtesy of a takeaway beer service - and has now added canned beers to its range.

Founded in 2017, the Iron Pier Brewery on the May Industrial Estate in Gravesend, has responded to the lockdown crisis by making its beers and ciders available in carry-out containers.

And it's been a huge hit with locals.

Run by founders Charlie Venner and James Hayward, alongside Jason Mortlock, who joined the team in 2019, the brewery produces 100,000 litres of beer a year and claims to be the only brewery in the South East to provide refrigerated direct delivery.

Now it has launched its first four cans - plans brought forward as a result of the pandemic.

Explains James Hayward: "Our plan was always to launch a range of cans, but making space for it in the brewing schedule had always been a challenge.

"With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic our cask sales to pubs vanished overnight, instantly clearing the brewing schedule, but opening up an opportunity at the same time.

"We have previously offered small batches of bottles for sale, usually taken from our barrel-ageing programme and only available via the taproom. The cans represent a move to wider distribution via our web shop and specialist bottle shops such as Fuggles Beer Cafe, in Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells, and The Beer Shop in Nunhead [in Southwark] and Folkestone."

The cans come with designs by local artist Duncan Grant - the man behind the cover of the 2018 Man Booker Prize winning The Milkman by Anna Burns.
