A second goat has died after an arson attack on their Maidstone stable.

Someone threw a firework into the pen of goats Twinkle and Belle back in November, setting their hay on fire and causing a blaze.

Both goats were badly burnt.

Twinkle died just two days after the fire.

The goats were being fostered by a Maidstone family on behalf of the Buttercups Goat Sanctuary in Boughton Monchelsea.

Today, the sanctuary announced that it had taken the sad decision to have Belle put down.

Buttercups founder Robert Hitch said: "It is with deep regret that after consultation with the vet this morning, Belle the surviving goat from the arson attack has had to be put to sleep."

He said: "After much care, love and attention, and after having a claw removed, we find that now today her other feet had deteriorated to such an extent that they were inoperable.

"The medical advice given to us was that it was in Belle’s best interest and the kindest thing was for her to be euthanised.

"Belle past peacefully in the arms of her fosterer.

"We would like to thank everyone for their good wishes and support for Belle during these troubled times."

At the time of the attack, CCTV at the stable revealed someone opening the door and throwing the firework in.

Sanctuary manager Gower McCarthy said: "We are meant to be a nation of animals lovers and people can do something like this. It's horrific."
