Dozens of drivers have been fined after being spotted by police failing to wear seatbelts and using mobile phones at the wheel.

The operation, carried out by probationer officers in Maidstone last Thursday, saw 34 motorists stopped for not wearing their seatbelts.

A further six were issued with fines after they were seen using their phones and two more for driving without an MOT.

Offenders driving whilst using mobiles could potentially face a maximum fine of £200 and up to six penalty points on their driving licence.

The checks were set up at the junction of Northumberland Road and Willington Street in Shepway to promote safe driving in the area.

PC Ally O'Callaghan said: "Road safety is everyone's responsibility and this includes wearing a seatbelt whilst driving.

"By not buckling up, drivers are not only risking a fine but could be seriously injured if involved in a collision.

"Using a seatbelt reduces the chances of a fatality in a collision by 50%.

"During the Shepway operation local residents and motorists were pleased to see officers promoting safe driving in the area.

"We regularly carry out these operations to target people who do not drive safely and put themselves and others at risk and will continue to do so."
