Fire crews are looking into the cause of a major fire on a floating restaurant on the River Medway.

The Embankments Bar and Grill went up in flames just after 8am on Wednesday causing travel disruption in the centre of Maidstone.

At its height, seven fire engines were at the scene near Bishops Way. A witness said thick smoke could be seen from Week Street.

There were no reported injuries.

The incident comes after the restaurant, formally known as the Barge, was hit by flooding over Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, a pleasure boat broke loose in the high water, swept downriver and became trapped under the prow of the floating restaurant.

The venue first opened in 2009 and sits just behind the Archbishop's Palace.
