A young Maidstone United fan who battled a life-long heart condition has been honoured at a football match this afternoon.

Club fans took part in a minute's applause to remember Alfie Weedon at the start of the match against Oxford City FC, at Court Place Farm Stadium in Oxford. Another round of clapping was heard in the 16th minute.

The same tribute will also take place at the Gallagher Stadium, in James Whatman Way, Maidstone, on Tuesday.

Alfie, who was 16, was born with heart problems, grew up in the County Town and moved to Hastings when he was eight. But he continued to travel back to games every weekend.

He also trained with the club's team for disabled youngsters - the Maidstone United Raiders.

The teenager passed away on Monday.
