Flood alert for Lower River Medway in Maidstone

Further flood alerts have been issued around Kent as river levels continue to rise.

Extensive areas around Maidstone are covered by the new warning, with the rain set to continue overnight.

The River Medway in Maidstone could to flood

It comes after a yellow weather warning was put in place for heavy rain and strong winds from 5pm until 6am tomorrow.

The Environment Agency has now issued a flood alert for the Lower River Medway.

Low-lying land and paths are expected to flood between Wateringbury and Maidstone town centre, particularly in the Lockmeadow area.

The alert covers the River Medway from Hampstead Lock at Yalding to Allington Lock, including East Farleigh, Wateringbury, Teston and Teston Park, Tovil and Maidstone including Millennium Park.

Experts are expecting water levels to remain high throughout tomorrow as further rain is forecast for tonight.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if required.

"Please avoid walking or driving through floodwater and stay aware in case further warnings are issued."

Maidstone Borough Council has asked residents to report any flooding in the area by calling the incident communication service on 0845 850 3518.
