The 37 pupil cohort and their families walked to their new classrooms underneath a rainbow of balloons with big smiles on their faces.

They followed a one way system and social distancing rules.

Delighted to finally be open, Principal Charlotte Barnden said: "It is safe to say each and every one of the new pupils had a fantastic first day and are looking forward to coming back.

"Families were thrilled to see everything ready and prepared and pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves, settling in quickly and with beaming smiles and with some not wanting to leave.

"The moment it was safe to do so, the Bearsted Primary Academy team came on site to ensure classrooms and learning environments were ready, safe and prepared for opening."

The coronavirus meant there were fears the school may not be ready on time as the construction site had to close during lockdown.

Families were notified in April of the possibility of a temporary site up until Christmas but as soon as contractors were allowed back, the project was back on track and the academy opened as planned.

The primary academy located near to the KIMS Medical Campus. is one of six new schools to open in Kent this month .

Also part of the Leigh Academy Trust, Snowfields Academy, a brand new specialist secondary school welcomed pupils for the first time this week.

The academy next-door also on Popesfield Way teaches children aged 11-18 with ASD as their primary need.
