Members of a parish council say they are thrilled they have saved an area of ancient woodland.

Leybourne Woods will now be preserved for generations to come after it was bought using a government community grant.

The 21 acres of woodland is between Birling Road and the A228 Leybourne and West Malling bypass.

In April, campaigners launched a petition to save the ancient site after it was put up for sale for £150,000.

Many called on the parish council to buy the land and guarantee its protection.

It was confirmed in June this had happened but was subject to contract and confirmation of funds.

The parish council has now been able to officially purchase the land, after securing £120,000 from the government’s Community Ownership Fund – issued by the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities.

It was announced yesterday (September 25) that 45 spaces across the UK will receive more than £12.3m.

The grants will help local projects so they can continue to play an important role in people’s lives.

Among those was Dartford Gym and Youth Club, also known as Europa Gym, which received £244,920, as well as The Margate School, which was awarded £400,000.

Leybourne Parish Council chairman Kevin Wagstaff said: “This remarkable accomplishment would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our residents.

“We want to express our sincere appreciation to all who voted for the current council during the election and those who passionately signed the petition, demonstrating the strength of our collective dedication to protecting our local environment.

“The successful bid and grant acquisition were the results of the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff and councillors who worked diligently to make a compelling case for the acquisition of Leybourne Woods.

“Their commitment to preserving this natural treasure for the community is truly commendable, and their hard work has paid off.”

The parish council says it is committed to ensuring that the woodland “continues to thrive as a place of natural beauty, recreation, and community connection”.

Members plan to work closely with local stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan for the sustainable management and enhancement of the area.
