Police officer injured after car runs over his foot during stop in Maidstone

A police officer was run over while trying to stop a car after an alleged mail theft.

The PC's foot was driven over and he also suffered injuries to his hand after the vehicle failed to stop when he approached it in Maidstone.

The incident happened at 11.40am on Saturday in the car park behind Tesco Express off Hermitage Lane, Barming.

Officers had been called to reports a man had been spotted stealing mail from communal post boxes.

The suspect fled the scene but just before 8pm yesterday the vehicle involved was spotted in the same area.

A 49-year-old man from Barking, East London, was then arrested on suspicion of assault, dangerous driving and theft. He remains in custody.
