Gillingham’s bid for a striker is still on the table.

Manager Steve Evans revealed early on in pre-season that they had made a cash bid for a higher-league player.

But since making the offer the Gills have been left waiting.

Boss Evans spoke on Tuesday about where the deal was at but little has changed.

He was attempting to contact the club’s sporting director before the club’s photocall on Tuesday, without success.

“The latest we have got is whether they can get their players in (that they want to sign),” he said.

“He’s not answered (my call) and he either has no news or he is busy himself. We are trying.

“We have never hidden it, we would like to add to the group, we have put money on the table for someone and they intimated that maybe it could be a loan rather than a permanent and we said either.

“That is where we are. We will find out more in the next few days.”

The Gills have already strengthened their forward line with the signings of Mikael Mandron, Mikael Ndjoli and loan striker Alex Jakubiak.

Evans is still also chasing players that can fill in down the left flank.

The Gills boss confirmed on Tuesday that winger Matt Jarvis was back training at the club but he needs time to assess the player before making a decision.

Assessing his squad, he said: “I know the starting formation (for the season opener at Doncaster) if nobody else in the building changes and I know the starting formation if we get one or two in.

“We would like to strengthen down the left hand side and we have never hidden that, at left-back and slightly further forward and there is always room for a striker who scores goals isn’t there?

“If we can get that to happen we would be pleased but at the same token if we go to Doncaster with the same group that we have at the moment then we will go and do our best.”
