Snow in Sevenoaks as cold and wet conditions prompts county gritters to urge drivers to take extra care on Kent roads

Snow has fallen in high parts of Kent overnight as increasingly cold and icy conditions set in.

The change to the weather has led county highways teams to issue safety reminders to drivers bracing the roads this morning to take extra care.

Residents in West Kingsdown wake up to snow

Pictures from Sevenoaks show a blanket of snow set in overnight bringing a late white Christmas.

Residents in West Kingsdown woke to see their streets, gardens and driveways paved with the white stuff. Villagers in Meopham also found the green decorated in snow.

Meanwhile, Kent County Council Highways' gritting team tweeted this morning to say rain had turned to snow in some places on higher grounds.

It urged drivers to take extra care on the roads and expect sudden changes in driving conditions.

The weather is set to turn more wintry this week as the Met Office predicts more heavy rain in the afternoon, with flood alerts in place.

Snow has been seen in parts of Sevenoaks

With temperatures plummeting across much of the county, increasingly cold conditions are expected to set in bringing a mix of light winds and wintry showers.

Things will start to look up tomorrow with dry and bright conditions early on and spells of afternoon sunshine, the weather forecaster says.

Before this once again descends into bitterly cold conditions with wintry showers on Friday and widespread frost and freezing fog patches over the weekend.
