A man has died after a boat capsized in the Thames Estuary.

Initial reports suggested the accident happened at the Port of Sheerness but it was in fact almost five miles off shore.

Police, the South East Coast Ambulance Service and air ambulance were called to the RNLI Lifeboat Station at the docks in Sheerness just before 8am.

A search by RNLI volunteers found the man, whose age is not known. It is thought he was on a fishing boat, which is believed to be from Queenborough.

He was taken back to the station.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Despite the best efforts of everyone... the man was sadly pronounced dead.

"We sent two ambulance crews, one ambulance car and the air ambulance service joined us for a short time."

It is understood RNLI crews searched the area near where the boat capsized as they could not be sure if anyone else was onboard.

His next of kin has been told.
