Fresh plans for the Isle of Sheppey's first natural burial ground have been revealed.

Sheppey Natural Burial Ground Limited, the company behind the proposal, has submitted a new application to Swale council to convert agricultural land off Harty Ferry Road at Harty.

It comes after the firm’s first chosen piece of land, in Eastchurch Road, by Kingsborough Manor, was found to be unsuitable by the Environment Agency. Those plans were lodged in December 2017.

The new site, covering more than two acres, is near Elliotts Farm – 2.6 miles from Leysdown Road.

In a planning statement, the firm said: “The Sheppey Natural Burial Ground Limited has been formed due to the urgent need of this facility that has become apparent from investigations.

“The proposed site has been identified as an appropriate and suitable location that provides easy and convenient access for all.”

It added: “Whilst at present the proposed natural burial ground is of a limited size, there are plans for future extensions on the southern boundary as and when the need arises.”

The final resting place would also feature a parking area for 15 cars including two disabled spaces.

The gates to the site would also be set back from the road to allow cars to stop at the gates clear of the road. There would also be a separate pedestrian gate.

Proceeds from the sale of the Halfway Conservative Hall will help fund the site.

There are two other natural burial grounds in Swale – Deerton Natural Burial Ground, near Teynham, and Riverview at Lower Halstow.

Such sites are considered a more eco-friendly option.
