Man suffers burns after bonfire gets out of control in Water Lane, Hawkhurst, Cranbook

A man suffered minor burns after a bonfire in Cranbrook got out of control.

Firefighters were called to Water Lane, Hawkhurst, a where a small bonfire had spread to stacked timber in high winds.

To fire engines attended yesterday at around 4pm and extinguished the flames by 5.40pm, with crews providing first aid to a man who had suffered minor buns.

He was then looked after by paramedics.

Following the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to avoid having bonfires in high winds, and to stay alert.

A spokesman said: "If you need to leave a bonfire unattended for any amount of time, or become distracted by another task, ask someone else to keep an eye on it for you, or extinguish it to prevent it becoming out of control.

"It's always advisable to keep a hosepipe or bucket of water on standby in case flames start to spread, however it's important not to put yourself in danger and to call 999 if it gets out of control."
