Whitstable man charged with criminal damage and attempting to steal lead from All Saints Church

A man is due to appear in court accused of trying to steal lead from a church roof and causing £16,500 worth of criminal damage.

Police were called to All Saints Church in Church Street, Whitstable, just after 9pm on March 24.

Two officers climbed up on top of the church where a man had been left stranded after members of the public took his ladder away.

Samuel Morcom, 38, of Long Rock, Whitstable, was later arrested has since been charged with two offences.

The first charge alleges that Morcom caused £16,500 worth of damage to the church roof, while the second alleges he attempted to steal lead.

Morcom is due to appear at Margate Magistrates' Court on June 18.
