Kent Police arrest Herne Bay man on Whitstable church roof

A man reportedly trying to steal lead from a church roof was left stranded after members of the public took his ladder away.

Two officers then climbed up on top of All Saints Church in Church Street, Whitstable, to arrest the suspected thief.

Police had been alerted at 9.10pm on Tuesday after the man was spotted on the roof.

A 38-year-old from Herne Bay was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and burglary.

He has since been released on bail until Tuesday, April 21. Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing.
