Coleman takes Ashford 10k and county title

A record field of nearly 950 runners enjoyed perfect conditions for the 19th annual Ashford 10k road race on Sunday.

The event, sponsored by Givaudan, incorporated the Kent championships.

Medway & Maidstone AC's Michael Colemen won the race - and with it his second Kent 10k championship gold medal - in commanding style.

He finished nearly a minute and half clear of the field in a time of 30min 58sec.

In second place was Blackheath & Bromley runner Peter Tucker in 32.24, with former team-mate Jamie Atkinson (unattached) third (33.01).

Last year’s winner, Andy Welch of host club Ashford AC, was fourth (33.05).

Folkestone Running Club’s men took Kent championship team gold, led home by Sam Rigby (33:35).

Silver team winners were Ashford & District Road Running Club.

Former Ashford AC member Jess Trowbridge returned in triumph to claim the women’s trophy.

Trowbridge, now attached to Gateshead, had a splendid run making the top 30 overall to win in 36.56.

But the Kent championship title went to Paddock Wood's Tina Oldershaw (37.00) from Medway & Maidstone’s Helena Penfold (37.37).

The county bronze was won by Helen Wheeler (39.00)of Folkestone Running Club.
