Family flee house fire in New Romney after being alerted to the blaze by a smoke alarm

A family had to be evacuated from a house on the Romney Marsh last night after a fire broke out in the two storey property.

Around 30 firefighters, six fire engines and a water unit were sent to the farm house in Cuckolds Lane, in Snargate, near New Romney at 7.25pm.

It is believed that the fire started in the kitchen but then spread to the second floor and the roof space. It is reported that the house suffered around 20% damage.

One man, believed to be the home owner, and his children were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarm and evacuated.

A man suffered from smoke inhalation and had to be treated by paramedics.

The blaze was extinguished at around 10pm.

The cause of the fire still being investigated, although it is not being deemed suspicious at this point.
