The programme will return on Channel 5. It was previously aired on ITV.

Mr O’Grady said to Channel 5: “Blind Date is an incredibly special family show which brought laughter, tears and joy to TV viewers throughout the land.

"I am honoured to present the brand new series and, after speaking to Channel 5, I know the series is in safe hands.

"I can’t wait to see if we can find love.”

The 61-year-old was well known for being good friends with Cilla Black who presented the show for 18 years until 2003. She died in 2015.

The show, which was loved by all ages, has been updated for the 21st century but still has some classic themes such as the sliding panel.

The three question format and a live studio audience remain, as well as the humour and fun that audiences across the nation grew to love.

The show will also welcome LGBT contestants for the first time.
