Highways England tweeted: "Vehicle recovery and carriageway clean-up is complete and M20 is now open (J11-J10). Delays starting to ease. Safe onward journey."

Both carriageways were initially shut following the incident as emergency services tended to the victim, creating problems for motorists heading for the Eurotunnel terminal or the Port of Dover. However, the coastbound lanes reopened shortly afterwards.

The accident happened between Junction 10 and 11 and police urged motorists to find alternative routes. Congestion is building up on other nearby routes.

Police said there had been no arrests.

Highways England has warned drivers heading London-bound that the road is likely to remain closed "through the morning". All traffic was being diverted through Sellindge via the A20.
