A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a suspected hit and run in Mersham.

Gary Langham, in his 40s, from Folkestone, was found lying in Bower Road, with serious head injuries on Sunday morning.

It is believed he was discovered by a tractor driver around 7am before he was rushed to King’s College Hospital, in London, where he remains in a critical condition.

The 21-year-old, from Mersham, was arrested last night and is in police custody.

A police spokesman said he was arrested "as a result of the investigation".

Mr Langham is believed to have been at a big party in the area on the Saturday night – ‘Wobbly Bob’s Charity Ball’, but this has not been confirmed.

Officers issued an appeal the following day to trace the occupants of a dark-coloured high-powered car with a sports exhaust, and a ‘light coloured’ taxi, which were both believed to be in the area at the time.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Maxine Harris said: "We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s injuries and how they were sustained.

"We want to thank the witnesses who have got in touch already.

"We have had reports that there were two vehicles in the area, a taxi, and another vehicle which was heard revving its engine.

"The occupants of both of these vehicles might be able to help us with our investigations and provide us with important information as to what happened so I urge them to contact us."
