Motorcyclist dies following crash along A252 Ashford Road at Chilham

A motorcyclist has died following a crash in Chilham.

The 49-year-old man was riding along the A252 yesterday when his blue Triumph motorcycle collided with a red Vauxhall Zafira.

The rider, from Rochester, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 43-year-old woman from Gillingham, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Zafira suffered minor injuries.

The crash, which happened close to Chilham's village hall, was reported to police at 1.48pm.

The road was closed between the junction of the A252 / A28 Ashford Road and Shottenden Lane at Molash for most of the afternoon.

As well as police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the air ambulance were called to the scene.

It is understood that both vehicles caught fire following the smash.

Now, police are appealing for any witnesses to get in touch.

A spokesman said: "Officers are now appealing for any witnesses of the collision, or anyone who saw the vehicles in the moments leading up to the collision, to get in contact.

"Anyone with information is asked to call the serious collision investigation unit on 01622 798538, quoting DH/59/16."
