New canopy for Ashford town centre's bandstand will offer protection and reflect the town's railway history says council

Plans have been revealed to install a permanent canopy over the bandstand in Ashford town centre, at a cost of £65,000.

The cover, to be funded by the new homes budget, will replace the bright yellow parasol that previously offered shelter to performers or for events such as the Christmas lights switch-on.

The bandstand was originally installed in the High Street in 2003.

Specifically designed to fit within the existing bandstand, the new, powder-coated metal structure will create a permanent sheltered performance space.

Its design aims to reflect the town’s railway history, including embellishments inspired by train wheels and the elaborate ironwork often found at late 19th century railway stations.

It will feature a light grey roof, black posts, green fascia, fretwork and the bold words With Stronger Faith – the borough’s crest and motto adapted from Bethersden poet Richard Lovelace.

Cllr Neil Shorter, portfolio holder for the town centre said: “The new canopy will not only provide a permanent and sheltered area for key community events and performances, but also demonstrates Ashford Borough Council’s investment and commitment to the town.

“The new canopy will help to enliven the area as well as build on town centre activities such as the farmers’ market.”

It is due to be installed early this year with a launch to take place in March 2015.

There will be an information session hosted at the bandstand closer to the launch where council officers will explain the project and answer any questions.
