POLICE have issued a warning to owners of bicycles following reports that at least a dozen have been stolen in the Ashford area since September 28.

They have been taken from cycle racks and parking areas in the town centre, the Stour Centre complex and surrounding areas.

Police Community Support Officer Stuart Manning said: “We believe that the offenders are targeting bicycles that are secured by chains which can be cut through with bolt croppers.

"Although it incurs slightly more expense, purchasing a very strong chain or a metal security lock may deter thieves who will move on to an easier target."

As part of the bike security initiative being undertaken by the community safety unit in Ashford, more than 300 bikes have been marked at venues such as Goddington Park, Victoria Park, Kennington, and Bluebell Road.

Cyclists have a unique code fitted to their bike, ensuring that if the bike is stolen and recovered it can go back to the rightful owner. There is a small charge of £2.50 for the service.

PCSO Manning went on: "We started out marking sat navs but people kept asking if we could do their bikes. We now proactively go out into the community. It's great as we can meet more people and, more importantly, they get to know who we are."

After Christmas PCSO Manning Stuart and his team of helpers will be visiting schools. He added: “I’m sure a lot of people will get bikes for as Christmas so it’s an ideal time to get them marked. If you want to get your bike marked then contact me on 0777 222 5959 to find out the next convienient location to you.”

Anyone who sees people acting suspiciously in the vicinity of cycle parking areas is asked to contact South Kent police on 01233 289180.
