Police closed off Edinburgh Road multi-storey car park in Ashford town centre before detaining a man, 18, who had been on the roof

Police officers have detained an 18-year-old man and taken him to hospital after receiving reports he was on a car park roof.

It is believed he was threatening to jump when he scaled the multi-storey car park in Edinburgh Road, in the town centre.

Officers closed the car park for two hours while trying to talk the man down.

Ambulance crews and more police waited nearby.

Police were called to the scene at midday and the man was detained at 2.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "We were at the scene of the car park following reports a man was on the roof. An 18-year-old has since been detained and taken to hospital."

The multistory car park has since been reopened and emergency crews are no longer on the scene.
