Iron panels fall on to Ashford High Street from old Burton building

Shoppers had a lucky escape this afternoon after a heavy metal panel fell to the ground in Ashford town centre.

A pile of corrugated galvanised iron could be seen on the ground outside the former Burton men's shop premises.

Nearby shop workers and members of the public were seen to be trying to block off the area for other pedestrians, while emergency assessments were made. It has now been fixed back into place.

Kentish Express historian Steve Salter was in the town centre at the time it happened. He said: "It was falling down as we were standing there. They were really sharp edges. It's one of the notably worst kept buildings in the High Street."
