Kent uses its Kent connections to 'persuade' Jane Austen fans to visit Godmersham

The village of Godmersham aims to cash in on the historical decision to put the novelist Jane Austen and Godmersham Park on the new £10 banknote.

To mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice, a series of Jane Austen events are to be staged at the Park over the weekend of September 7 and 8.

The mansion was owned by Jane’s brother Edward and she often stayed there. Many of the grand houses in her novels are modelled on it.

Pride and Prejudice has been immortalised in many film and TV adaptations, perhaps most famously with the BBC series starring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.

The weekend will see Austen experts descend on Godmersham for a series of talks, a seated lunch in the Orangery on the Saturday plus exhibitions, a bookstall and visits to the Heritage Centre.
