Kennington manager Dan Scorer says new 3G pitch at Homelands is ‘absolutely brilliant’

Dan Scorer says Kennington’s season starts now after finally playing a home game.

Ton made their long-awaited return to Homelands, where they groundshare with landlords Ashford, for the opening match on the new 3G pitch.

They lost 4-2 to Whitstable on Tuesday night, to remain winless at the foot of Southern Counties East, but boss Scorer is looking at the bigger picture.

And after 14 successive away games in league and cup, it’s very much a fresh start for Ton who are looking forward to training back at Homelands having been restricted to indoor five-a-side facilities in recent months.

“The pitch is absolutely brilliant, so congratulations to Ashford and Don (Crosbie) and Derek (Pestridge) because I know it’s been very frustrating,” said Scorer.

“It was well worth the wait. It’s a beautiful surface. We couldn’t ask for much more and we’re very fortunate and grateful to be able to share the facility with them.

“I do think being back there, getting people behind us and just being able to train and work on things is going to be such a huge difference for us, and we’re looking forward to getting things under way now.

“For us, we feel like our season starts here really and if you look at the league table, it’s already split itself into two.

“So we know what our league table looks like and the teams we’re going to be competing against.

“That was our 10th game of the season, so we’re a quarter of the way through the season now, so I did say to all the boys that while, yes, we’re seeing improvements and positives each week, those improvements, those positives, have got to turn into points sooner or later otherwise we are going to find ourselves in a sticky situation, if we’re still not picking up points come Christmas.

“We’re looking forward to it. We feel like our season can really kickstart now and we’re looking forward to having a good run of games at home.”

Kennington trailed Whitstable 2-0 at half-time and while Jordan Griffin replied, the visitors opened up a 4-1 lead before Ryan Philpott’s last-minute consolation.

Scorer said: “It was a game in which Whitstable took chances at key moments and we didn’t.

“The frustrating thing for me really, is we did dominate a lot of the possession, certainly in the first half, and let ourselves down by not taking care of the ball enough.

“Full credit to Whitstable because their first two goals were from us losing the ball and them counter-attacking quickly which is what they do very well.

“But our overall performance I was pretty pleased with and I did say to the boys at half-time and at full-time, I feel for them because when we’re trying to be a side that presses high, and understanding each other’s triggers, it’s extremely difficult when we’ve not had anywhere to train.

“There were one or two moments where you could see not being able to train, not being able to work on things, has been the difference.”

Ton are four points adrift at the bottom but have games in hand.

They host Stansfeld tomorrow and Hollands & Blair in the Challenge Cup on Tuesday.
