Ashford United manager Tommy Warrilow feels his side are turning a corner with recent performances

Tommy Warrilow is finally starting to like what he sees from his Ashford side.

For much of the season it’s been a case of grinding out results from hit-and-miss performances while rebuilding the team.

But boss Warrilow felt something clicked in the 4-0 win over Haywards Heath and there were plenty of positives at Ramsgate last weekend - despite losing the top-of-the-table Isthmian South East clash 3-2.

“We’re moving forward,” said Warrilow. “I’m more than happy with the last two performances.

“I’m hoping we’ve turned a corner and given ourselves a platform to push on.

“We’ve been coughing and spluttering our way through games and picking up wins but the last two performances have been much better, even though we lost to Ramsgate.

“The shape looks better - the boys are getting more familiar with it.

“I was disappointed with the result at Ramsgate, and the goals we gave away, but I can’t be disappointed with the performance.

“How many times have I said in interviews I’m pleased with the way we’ve played this season?

“None. It’s always been that we know things aren’t right.

“That’s changed with the Haywards Heath and Ramsgate games.

“There were loads of positives and I’m really hoping that’s the springboard for us to push on.

“We’re not the finished article but I can’t fault the lads.”

Omarr Lawson gave Ashford an early lead at Ramsgate but they trailed by half-time following Kane Rowland’s double.

Toby Ajala levelled after the break, only for Jack Paxman to pinch victory for the leaders as Ashford dropped to fourth.

“I thought we deserved something out of it,” said Warrilow.

“It was a good game between two teams who were having a go.

“We mixed our game up well. We went long, we went short, we went wide, we went through the middle, we were patient.

“We haven’t defended well for the goals but I’m not going to go overboard on that because that’s one area where we’ve been outstanding all season.

“We didn’t defend balls coming into our box - two of the goals have come from crosses - but that doesn’t take away from the overall performance, which I was very pleased with.”

Ashford will need to be on their game when they meet Chichester at Homelands this Saturday (3pm).

The visitors sit ninth, five points outside the play-off places, but are a team Warrilow has a lot of time for.

He said: “I think Chichester are the most organised team in this league.

“People might think I’m mad for saying that but I have full respect and appreciation for the way they set their teams up.

“They’re in a nice little area just outside the play-offs, with a game in hand. We know what to expect from them.

“It’s going to be a very hard game but we’re looking to build on the last two performances, hopefully with a different result to Ramsgate.”

Lanre Azeez (thigh) and Mike Dalton (ankle) should be available, while Johan ter Horst is pushing to start after proving his fitness from the bench after a hamstring injury.
