Canterbury MP demands Donald Trump's visit to Britain be stopped

Labour MP Rosie Duffield has written to Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson demanding that he cancel American President Doanld Trump's visit to Britain next month.

On her Facebook page the Canterbury MP announced: "Today, I have written to the Foreign Secretary asking him to revoke the invitation to Donald Trump and halt his visit in July.

"Whilst President Trump has now ended his policy of separating children at the United States border, the Department for Health and Human Services have stated that detained children will not be immediately returned to their families.

"Amnesty International have described this as amounting to torture and I hope the Foreign Secretary, in the spirit of the UK's history of internationalism, will reconsider his invitation to the President until proper action is taken, including the USA rejoining of the UN Human Rights Council and the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Child, which would prevent any similar policies from being passed in future."

Her letter has attracted a mixed reaction.

Richard Hall wrote: "I am heartened by your letter to the foreign secretary.

"Many of us are watching events unfold in the US with ever growing dismay and also noticing the corrosive effect this is having on international politics.

"Both the person and the politics of Donald Trump are gross inversions of what caring and civilised people value.

"We should not have our own institutions tainted through any collusion with this man and what he represents."

And Freya Vass said: " (As an) American (soon to be ex-American) living in your constituency. Thank you."

But Faye King said: "You are my MP, too, Rosie and I agree with the President of The United States' visit, it’s totally impractical and a disaster for our relationship with our allies to prevent his visit. He is an elected leader of a country."

And Janette Nye replied: "No way. The man is welcome here. Why are you lot not against the nastiest with human rights issues such as Saudi Prince and others? Double standards!"
