Appeal after man in 80s dies after being hit by lorry on A28 near Sturry level crossing

An appeal has been launched following the death of a pensioner involved in a collision with a lorry.

The incident happened near the Sturry level crossing on the A28 in Canterbury at 12.20pm yesterday and involved a white Scania Tipper lorry and a pedestrian.

Police and paramedics attended the scene at the junction of Sturry Hill and Island Road and a section of the road was closed to traffic.

A man in his 80s was taken to a London hospital with serious injuries. He sadly later died.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers from Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone who saw the incident, or who has dashcam footage which might assist their enquiries, to come forward.”

One fire engine also attended to assist the police and left the area just before 2pm. The air ambulance was also called.

The collision caused serious delays, with traffic service Inrix reporting queueing traffic in the area leading to congestion to Canterbury retail parks, and back past Sturry Station.

Public transport was also affected with Stagecoach reporting delays and trains being temporarily paused at Sturry station.
