McDonald's in Sturry Road, Canterbury, sells mouldy bun to mum

A mum was horrified to find a mouldy bread bun as she prepared to tuck into a McDonald's takeaway with her family.

Ambulance technician Nikki Jacklin discovered the unsavoury bap after she and her family called in at the drive-thru in Sturry Road - which was shut yesterday after a maggot fell from the ceiling.

She called the restaurant to complain, but turned down the offer of a replacement meal.

The mum-of three said: "My husband Daniel and I had taken our kids to swimming lessons and as it was getting late, decided we would get a McDonald's to take home to Littlebourne.

"We sat around the table but when I opened my Thai chicken special, there was the bread bun with mould spots on it, which put me right off.

"So I had to watch while everyone else tucked in.

"I phoned the takeaway to complain and the manager apologised and said that if I brought it back, they would replace it.

"To be honest, we couldn't be bothered to drive all the way back into Canterbury and I think he should have offered a refund too, or even sent a taxi out to us with a fresh meal."

Mrs Jacklin posted a photo of the mouldy bun on the Canterbury Residents Group Facebook page, which prompted McDonald's head office to send her a customer service form to fill out.

The blunder on Friday evening was followed by further troubles for the Sturry Road branch, which had to close its restaurant area on Saturday after a maggot fell on a customer's head.

The source was revealed to be a dead seagull on the roof and a pest control company was brought in to investigate.

Franchise owner Paul Crocker said a very thorough cleansing operation had been undertaken and he was confident the restaurant was now safe and he expected it to re-open later today.

But he admitted the closure had cost the business thousands of pounds in loss trade.

He also apologised to Mrs Jacklin, saying: "I can only say that we are very sorry. It has never been an issue before and I think the duty manager was caught off guard in dealing with it.

"We will always offer a replacement and refund in those circumstances.

"All our bread is fresh with no preservatives, and used by its sell by-date because we have quite a high turnover, so I'm not sure what happened.

"It obviously should have been seen when the meal was prepared and packed."
