Police called to the Limes bar in Canterbury after Internet Interceptors vigilante group catch 'paedophile'

Police were called to a bar last night after an internet vigilante group filmed a man who was allegedly attempting to meet an underage boy.

In a video posted on Facebook, Internet Interceptors went to the Limes in Canterbury where a man, identified in the video as Simon, was believed to be planning to meet a 14-year-old.

The footage shows the man, thought to be 30, behind the bar being questioned by a woman from the group as to his intentions, having allegedly arranged to meet an underage boy.

He is accused of having sent five indecent images to the 'child'.

Limes, in London Road, has posted on its Facebook, slamming the group for a "homophobic attack" on the popular gay haunt.

Police say that a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grooming and remains in custody.

Detective Inspector Rob Chitham of Kent Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team added: "Taking the law into your own hands can be dangerous and inevitably leads to the identity of the alleged paedophile being revealed, often on the basis of little or flawed information.

"This frequently leads to suspects being threatened and diverts significant police resources into protecting them.

"I would like to reassure the public that we proactively target this type of offence and work hard to gather evidence in a lawful manner that will stand up in court."

Anyone with information about online grooming should contact police on 101 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
