The site best suited to house a new £5.4million community football hub in a Kent city has been announced.

The hub - at Ridlands Farm, near Kent and Canterbury Hospital - will have at its heart a new permanent home for the re-formed Canterbury City Football Club as well as a host of practice and training facilities.

The 18.8-acre plot is already home to Canterbury Bowling Club.

  • David Ford, the council's assistant head of culture and communication, admitted that identifying a piece of land suitable to house the ambitious development had been a long process, but the hope is that the stadium will be ready by August 2010.

Canterbury City Council's Executive member for culture, Cllr Harry Cragg, said the new hub would be a top-notch facility for the district.

City chairman Phil Knight welcomed the announcement and said that the club would, in partnership with the council, be organising a public meeting at which residents could hear first hand about the plans and discuss any issues they may have.

Mr Knight said: "The announcement is another important landmark in the process of developing the community football hub but a great deal more work remains to be done to bring the vision to reality."

Part of the money needed for the scheme - £472,000 - has been set aside from the development of City's former home at Kingsmead, while the remainder is expected to come from the council, private investment and grants.
