Sex for sale in shadow of Cathedral

A MASSAGE parlour offering full sexual services has set up within yards of Canterbury Cathedral.

People living in historic King Street are shocked over the brazen set up of the business, close to an entrance to the King’s School.

The news of the activity at 33a King Street comes just weeks after the eviction of Oriental tenants of a brothel in New Street, St Dunstan’s. Their set-up was exposed by the Kentish Gazette newspaper in June.

One King Street resident said: “I did have my suspicions. There is a red light on at the property in the evenings and I have seen men coming and going.

“Also, I have seen an Oriental woman getting a taxi from the property quite often around pub closing time. She usually hands the driver an address and they drive off.”

Another said: “I am very surprised. The tenants moved in about three weeks ago. I have seen a couple of Oriental girls come and go and there has been one disturbing incident a couple of weeks ago. A man turned up late at night and just banged on the door of 33a until about 5am.

“I saw a man slumped outside in the street. The police and an ambulance were called and there was a lot of screaming and shouting.

“When I went out the next day there were lots of red roses trampled on the pavement outside the property.

“I am very surprised to hear it is a brothel. This is a very quiet street and a Neighbourhood Watch area.”

Another resident said: “I am absolutely amazed. This has come completely out of the blue. I knocked on the door about three weeks ago when the new tenants moved in.

"The door was answered by an Oriental woman. She was with a man, who I thought was her husband. I have not seen or heard anything out of the ordinary though.”

An advert similar to that advertising the New Street brothel, has appeared in a local newspaper, not part of the Kent Messenger Group. It offers “sweet oriental massage” and lists two mobile phone numbers.

When a Kentish Gazette reporter rang the number the phone was answered by a woman with an Oriental accent.

She said she had two girls, one Japanese and one Malaysian, working on that day. She then quoted prices for sexual services and gave the address as 33a King Street.

The property was let by Countrywide Residential Lettings, which has an office in Castle Street, Canterbury. The agency was contacted but refused to comment.
