Roaring Lancaster bombers, booming Typhoon fighter afterburners, and rapid Spitfires will be the high flyers to make this year’s Herne Bay Air Display the biggest ever.

The event, organised by the Bay Promo Team, has secured the wartime favourites after applying to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight group to use the aircraft.

The town has a strong link to the Dambusters as Barnes Wallis tested his bouncing bomb at Reculver ahead of air raids on the Ruhr dams.

Organiser Gerald McCarthy said: “We applied to the Battle of Britain memorial group in September, so we’ve had several months of waiting patiently.

“We will have the Lancaster bomber, Hurricanes and Spitfires, and a RAF Typhoon fighter, which will cost us several thousand pounds.

“We are within budget, so people will have their eyes on the skies again this August. It will be the biggest air event we've had so far.”

He added that there is set to be a packed programme of events this August. Herne Bay Town Partners are organising a military band to perform alongside old army vehicles. There will also be the Herne Bay carnival and festival, and there are plans for picnic in the park for the final weekend in August.
