Police say an officer was driving along the road when they spotted the lights of the red Peugeot 207 off the side of the road.

Other patrols and ambulance crews were called to the London-bound carriageway and the A2 was shut off.

An air ambulance also landed nearby and flew one of the women to a London hospital, while the other was taken by road.

They both suffered injuries described as serious, but not life-threatening.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or saw the Peugeot in the moments leading up to it, should contact police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/59420/24.

Motorists with dashcams, who were in the area, are also being urged to check their devices for any important footage.
