Canterbury Hockey Club men's player-coach Kwan Browne hoping to sign two forwards including fellow Trinidadian Mickell Pierre

Kwan Browne is hoping the arrival of two forwards in the new year will help reinvigorate Canterbury Hockey Club’s men as they bid to avoid relegation.

Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Beeston left Browne’s side rock bottom with just three points from their opening 11 games in the NOW:Pensions Premier Division.

But the player-coach believes the return to Polo Farm of fellow Trinidadian Mickell Pierre, who he hopes will be joined by an as yet unnamed overseas striker, will help the youngsters in the squad start to fulfil their potential.

Browne, whose side have managed just 18 goals this season, explained: “We are normally one of the highest scorers in the league but this year we are one of the lowest which shows we have struggled.

“We have had good spells of possession in most of our games but when we get to the final third our decision making and skill execution have been poor.

“Mickell has always scored goals when he’s played here and has been wanting to come back for a while.

“We are also talking to an Australian and a Malaysian and hope one of them will be with us by the end of this month."

“We have a lot of young players and they all play up front. They’ve got plenty of energy and enthusiasm but we probably need a bit more experience.”
