Invicta East Kent athlete Charlotte Henrich in frame for selection for Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago

Invicta East Kent’s Charlotte Henrich could be off to the Youth Commonwealth Games in August.

Despite winning the 200m and 400m at the Kent County Championships in May, with her 200m time putting her sixth in the UK rankings, her 400m effort did not meet the qualifying standard for the Commonwealths, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago.

With the pressure on in her final chance to run the qualifying time at the England Athletics Under-20 Championships Henrich delivered - twice.

She won her heat in a time of 54.95 and the next day went even quicker with a time of 54.06 to become champion and with a time that enables her to qualify for both the Under-20 European Championships and the Commonwealths, should she be selected.

Henrich’s training partners have also been enjoying a string of successes. Fellow under-20, Scarlet Thomas-Wright’s electric 60m (11th in the UK) and 100m (25th in the UK) times earned qualification for the UK Championships for the first time in her career at Manchester next month.

Fellow training partner under-17 Jay Sanders has enjoyed a successful season so far with a win in the 400m at the County Championships and Inter-Counties, picking up personal best after personal best along the way. At the recent Kent Schools, he ran a huge PB of 49.87 which puts him ninth in the UK rankings, as well as securing third in the 200m at the Kent Championships.

Following quickly behind is teammate Roddy Ostle. The under-17 finished third in the 400m at the Kent County Championships and fourth in the Kent Schools with a new personal best of 51.79.

Coach Carlo Monticolombi said “It’s such an exciting time for all of our athletes with some big competitions coming up. They have all really made huge progress.

“We’re all incredibly proud of their achievements so far this year and know there is a lot more to come!”
